"Too dense, not worth it." 2010-08-19
By OldSchool
I got really excited about these sticks a while back before I started shopping on amazon, finally ordered them the other day and I was very disappointed. The reason is that I own a pair of effects sticks (called rutes) from vic firth. They have natural a foam/cork core with about 8-10 little bamboo or wood sticks (kind of like some incense sticks) around the outside. They are so soft and have the warmest sound and I love them to death. They give your snares and toms a completely different sound, even though they aren't too good with cymbals. I was expecting a similar response from these sticks, seeing that the tips are made of felt. I was thinking something along the lines of thinner fiber, more aired out piece of felt, however what's on the stick is extremely dense and pretty much cancels the point of using them. Don't get me wrong they do have a different response, cymbals can really get interesting here as you basically have a set of soft mallets where you can get a nice shimmering effect etc. For the rest though it's almost comparable to a wooden tip a while it does sound warmer, it's not by very much.

If you want to hit some really funky stuff or experiment around a little I highly suggest the rutes, they are completely soft and very warm.

 "Mesh heads" 2010-03-22
By R. J. Crane (Seattle, Wa USA)
Just know that these things do not feel like drum heads, no matter who makes them. They make very little noise and it IS something to hit, but there is quite a bit of bounce to this. I'm thinking about glueing a round piece of foam underneath to slow it down. Otherwise, no complaints.

 "good starter instrument" 2010-02-07
By R. Bowman (missoula, mt United States)
I recently heard a performance by a recorder consort which piqued my curiosity. The Aulos is an inexpensive, good looking entry. The tone is quite good, assuming I do my part. That is the area where I cannot evaluate the instrument. I have sometimes have problems getting my fingers in exactly the right position to get a clear sound in the correct register, with the precise breath control to stay on pitch. However, I think this may apply to all recorders and not the Aulos in particular.

 "Great first recorder" 2010-01-19
By Robert Watson
This recorder is a great first recorder. It sounds very nice. When I first got it there were no problems, the recorder was flawless. This is my first recorder and I am already playing a few simple songs just 1 week after getting it. Overall I love the Aulos recorder, and I would recommend it highly.

 "Fantastic" 2009-10-31
By Joseph E. Rondeau (Dracut, MA)
I love this recorder! I had used a friend's Aulos and fell in love with it, so I bought my own. A slightly different model, I think I like this one better. It has a very clear tone and it speaks very well in all registers. The beauty of the lower range is what really makes this instrument sparkle.

For the first time on DVD, and remixed (by Simon himself!) in Dolby 5.1 surround, Simon Phillips: Complete includes Simon’s groundbreaking videos Simon Phillips and Simon Phillips Returns on one disc. This DVD combines brilliant trio performances with concise and informative instructional segments. Simon demonstrates the drum patterns played in each song, first slowly and then up to speed, and covers topics such as double bass drums, bass and snare drum tuning, hand/foot independence exercises, practice techniques, timekeeping, odd-meters, and playing with a click. In addition, he performs two incredible free form drum solos which incorporate the fiery technique and ambidexterity that he has become known for. Remixed in 5.1 surround sound by the artist himself, the DVD includes brand new footage of Simon in the studio, explaining the concepts behind 5.1 surround sound and his own mixing process.  "Almost scary" 2010-03-18
By Mikael Bohlin (Sweden)
Simon is really taking it to the extreme and the performaces in these videos are very inspiring. I suppose even less experienced drummers can benefit from looking at this as it contains good basic training techniques. It also covers tuning and even mixing, so this is really something to smile about for all us drummers.

too bad the updated commentary of making the video doesn't include recent footage of performance.

"Exciting, amusing and very useful." 2008-11-05
By Phil Sac (Santiago, Chile)
I imagine Simon Phillips needs no introduction indeed, so we can skip that part.

The amazing thing about this long awaited DVD is the fact that all these great and complicated stuff Phillips executes are whithin the context of great music, written by him and performed with two other great musicians otherwise, what would be the point of such amazing technique and skill?

Through very clear chapters Simon explains how to tune, why he position himself like that behind the kit, etc., in a humble way only great a talented people can show.

The double bass technique is explained and shown in a very useful and understandable way so you can play or practice along. He is miles away from showing himself off with what he's doing which seems to be the usual these days. And the sound of that kit? In my humble opinion that's the way a drumkit should sound, wide open, lots of projection and sweet tom-toms sound since he plays off the heads instead of whacking the kit, which is the current tendency. Listening to this DVD, even though I still haven't done it 5.1 is an enjoyable experience not only for drummers but for anyboby who appreciates great music. The track performed are in that interesting area among jazz, rock and fusion so there is something for everyone here. The interview with Simon talking about the 5.1 mix, which he did entirely is very interesting even for us not so involved in recording matters. Least but not last, even though this DVD has no subtitles, is perfectly understandable because of Simon's slow and plain british accent, so it won't be a problem for any audiences worldwide.

Five stars/thumbs for Simon....again!

 "Fantastic Simon Primer!" 2007-11-29
By Ian Braun (tennessee)
This DVD is the complete set of what had previously been 2 separate vhs tapes. Simon's playing is, of course, incredible. For any drummer interested in Simon's playing this is a must. There are some advanced concepts here, but Simon is extremely good at explaing what is going on in simple language. For those who are more musically literate there were two instruction books based on the videos. The video can be seen as a progression from simpler (well simple for Simon) material to more advanced. Something like 'Cosmos' can be approached at a much easier level than say 'Force Majeure.' The section on Odd Time is great, and if you buy the instructional books, there are play-alongs to all of the material. Also, in terms of sheer performance Simon is always so exciting to watch that even if you don't play drums near that level, you will love the 'Concert' footage.

By Jose E. Gutierrez
I started playing drums a couple of years ago , a problem I had was the sticks flying off from my hand when playing fast and hard ,at first I was hesitant to order this wax , wax ?? sounds like it will make my sticks more slippery , well, I was wrong and my problem is now solved , this wax is fantastic , I applied a light coat to my sticks and I could not beleive the difference ,my fingers feel like they are glued to the sticks , I applied the wax several weeks ago and my sticks still feel like the first day , so I have the feeling this small tin will last a looong time .

 "Great Product" 2009-10-11
By K. C. Christensen
This product is amazingly informative and frustrating (in a good way) with its precise measuring of your playing. I think the in the next version it would be great if they could somehow work in two handed analyzing(maybe a sensor on the left and right side) as well as rudiments. Another cool feature would be some orchestral excerpts, but even just rudiments would help out. If you're in the market for a metronome to use with a practice pad, (maybe around $70 total) it would be wise to spend a bit more for something like this that tells you if you are using both correctly- which is the point of having those things.

Customer Buzz
 "Great practice tool" 2009-02-27

Customer Buzz
 "What a wonderful product" 2007-10-05
By Lawrence T. Salzman (Fullerton,CA)
I had heard a lot about the Beatnik from reviews in magazines, online reviews, word of mouth etc. Finally I had a chance to try one out. I was amazed at how user friendly it was, very simple to operate. There are so many possibilites with the unit, a simple written review does not do the product much justice. Now for the interesting part which is the accuracy measuring. This thing lets you know EXACTLY whats going on tempo wise, accuracy wise, and how well you control your dynamics. On the expert level it rounds up or down to the nearest 512th note, if you think about that its pretty amazing. If you happen to play on top or way ahead of the beat you will soon learn out just how ahead you are. If you play behind you will be given the same information. The bottom line with this product is it measures pretty much everything and you can learn a lot about yourself in a short amount of time. The only down fall is the head phones that come with it, use the onboard speaker or some better fitting headphones.
